Changing your Shopify URL may sound technical, but it’s actually a simple process that takes just a few clicks once you know what part of the URL you want to update. You might want to change your store domain for stronger branding or adjust URL handles for products, collections, and pages to improve SEO and visibility.
By default, every Shopify store comes with a domain like example-store.myshopify.com
. While this default URL cannot be removed or changed, you can easily connect a custom domain to match your brand and set it as the primary domain. You can also edit individual pages and product URLs for better search rankings and a smoother user experience.
Understanding Shopify URLs
Shopify URLs have basically two parts.
- Storefront URL: The main URL that customers use to access your store, for example example-store.com.
- Page/Resource URLs: The specific link to product, collection, blog, article or page within your store for example example-store.com/pages/contact.

How to Change the Shopify Store domain
The default Shopify domain looks like your-store-name.myshopify.com you can’t be able to change or remove this domain, but you can connect a custom domain with your Shopify store and set it as the Primary domain. The default domain always exists in the background. To connect a custom domain, navigate to Shopify Admin > Settings > Domains, and then you can buy a domain from Shopify or connect the one you already own. After connecting your domain, make it Primary. Follow these steps to change the Shopify URL.
Step 1: Navigate to Shopify Admin > Settings

Step 2: Go to the Domains tab.

Step 3: Buy a new domain directly from Shopify

Step 4: Search for a domain according to your brand and buy one

Step 5: Connect the existing domain that you purchased from another provider.
Step 6: Search the existing domain and click Next.

Step 7: Once the domain is connected, it will appear in your domain list. Click Change Primary domain and select the new one that you connected.
Step 8: Save the changes.
How to Change URLs for Product, Collection or Pages
In Shopify, you can change the URLs and handles for products, collections or pages to make it a more SEO friendly site. For this, navigate to the Shopify Admin and scroll down the SEO Preview link section and click on the Edit button. From there, you can change the handle for your desired product. Collection of pages. Follow these steps to change the handle for your site for different pages.
Step 1: Navigate to Shopify Admin > Products

Step 2: Select the product which you want to update.
Step 3: Scroll down to the search engine listing part.

Step 4: Click on the edit button on the top right.

Step 5: From the URL field, you can change the handle of that product.

Step 6: Make sure to click Save either on the top or the bottom of the page.

Note: Repeat these steps for collection or pages as well. Open the desired page and in the search engine listing section, update the page handle.
How to redirect old URLs to New URLs
If you set up a new URL, then it is good practice to make a redirect URL so that visitors to the old URL can redirect to the new URL if they search for that and they don’t see a 404 error page message. Follow these steps to add a Redirect URL in your Shopify Admin.
Step 1: Shopify often gives you an option to create a URL Redirect after saving the handle. Check this box, and Shopify will automatically create that for you.

Step 2: Make sure to hit Save.
Step 3: To manually add the URL redirect, follow these steps. Navigate to The Shopify Admin > Contents > Menus.

Step 4: Click on the URL redirects button.

Step 5: Click on the Create URL Redirects button. You can also import a CSV file for URL redirects.
